People had different rationing books for different ages. Children had the most food, but people still experienced a strict diet. Children between the ages of 5-16 had rationing books that were the colour blue. They mostly contained fruit, the full potion of meat, and half a pint of milk a day. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 5 had the green ration books and they were able to have the first choice of fruit, a double supply of eggs, and like the other children, a full meat ration (plus, they had a pint of milk). They rest of the people had buff-coloured ration books, which had normal rations.

When the war started, children found it hard to adjust to the war. Children couldn't concentrate when they had to take regular gas drills at school. They found very funny especially when they found that blowing through the rubber made rude noises. The war had a bad effect on the children's spirit. The teachers had a mostly had a bad influence on the children and exaggerated that every German was appalling and horrific, so they made the children think that every German should be exterminated (which was not true).
